The meeting of the services conference, chaired by the prefect, Dr. Giuseppe Ranieri, with the participation of the Hon. Eliana Longi, member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into illicit activities connected to the waste cycle and other environmental and agri-food offenses and, in videoconference, the Hon. Elena Pagana, regional councilor for Territory and Environment, has defined the emergency initiatives to be implemented by the next summer season for the prevention and fight against the phenomenon of “fumaroles” in the municipal territories of the ftransformed axe.

The conference follows a series of activities launched by the Prefecture on the subject of indiscriminate abandonment of waste, illegal landfills and the “fumarole” phenomenon and also saw the participation of the general director of the Department of the Environment of the Sicilian Region as well as Extraordinary Commissioner of the Free Consortium of Ragusa, the mayors of the province, the Police Commissioner, the Provincial Commanders of the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza, the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Provincial Health Authority, the representative of the ARPA, the president of the Srr-Ato 7 company, the representatives of Sicindustria, Coldiretti and Confagricoltura and the president of the “Terreclean” association.

During the meeting, with a view to preventing fires of greenhouse waste materials in the transformed area, the developments of the initiatives launched following the previous meeting were noted.

In particular, the Hon. Longi reconstructed some of the activities of the parliamentary commission of which he is a member, highlighting the need to prevent and counter any possible interest of eco-mafias in the waste disposal cycle sector in the area, with particular regard to polyethylene, considered a real economic resource.

The Hon. Longi added that the problem of fumaroles in the province of Ragusa has been included in the work of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into illicit activities connected to the waste cycle and other environmental and agri-food offenses and there will be a specific hearing. Furthermore, the Hon. Longi has initiated discussions with the Polieco Consortium in order to evaluate every possible useful intervention for the reuse of special plastic waste, confirming the consortium’s willingness to intervene on the disposal of the aforementioned material, produced in the agricultural activities of the Municipalities falling within the so-called transformed zone .

During the meeting, the Hon. Elena Pagana highlighted how the Region is strongly committed, together with the institutions of the province of Ragusa, in activating the necessary interventions to safeguard the environment, combating the indiscriminate abandonment of waste and restoring the coastlines devastated by the abandonment of plastics on state-owned strip. Particularly important in this sense is the coordination activity implemented by the Environment Department with Arpa, the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa and the municipalities of Acate and Vittoria which is allowing the achievement of significant results such as the inclusion in the programming of the FSC 2021/ 27 of the project for environmental restoration and defense against erosion of the coastline between the mouth of the Dirillo and the Vittoria area.

An important step forward in resolving the problem is represented by the identification, by the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa, of an area located in the Perciata district, in the Vittoriese area, for the construction of a collection station for the delivery of the so-called. “fratta” and for its subsequent composting.

Again with a view to preventing the fumarole phenomenon, an important contribution was also provided by the Municipality of Vittoria, with the provision of an area dedicated to the monitoring of air quality to the Ragusa Arpa, through sophisticated equipment that allows you to measure the levels of dioxin possibly present in the air.

A further meeting, of a technical-operational nature, has therefore been set, to be held as early as next week, for the activation of the collection center made available by the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa, where the waste can be urgently delivered. of agricultural activities, differentiating them from plastic and polyethylene.
