Matteo Caracciolini School Ship launched at the Piloda Group shipyards. A social project, “Mestieri del mare” – “Scugnizzi a vela”, which was born from the agreement between the Navy and the Department of Juvenile Justice and which found its first application in Naples with an agreement between the Juvenile Justice Center and the Logistics Command of the Navy, today headed by Team Admiral Salvatore Vitiello. Agreement of which the Life-Scugnizzi sailing association founded by Stefano Lanfranco is one of the beneficiaries and Piloda Group is now the host offering its shipbuilding base for the launching of the “Matteo Caracciolini” training ship. The objective is to make the young people who participate in the “Sea Crafts Laboratory” autonomous and competent, designed to promote the integration and training of young people at risk of deviance and marginalization in the Metropolitan City of Naples. This is done through the restoration of wooden sailing boats belonged to the Navy and used as real teaching material in laboratory activities.

The initiative

In 2014, Matteo, a historic wooden twin-mast from the 1970s, was purchased by the Naval League of Ischia, similar to what was created in 1914 in the “da scugnizzi a marinaretti” initiative, in which the then Minister of the Navy donated the city of Naples of the wooden corvette called the “Caracciolo” asylum ship which welcomed street urchins to transform them into skilled sailors. In 2017, the Matteo Caracciolini School Ship was transferred from the Darsena Acton, for demanding restoration work, to Piloda Group, where it was welcomed with great enthusiasm by all the workers. Thus a synergy was created between the group’s workers and the “Scugnizzi” which went far beyond the simple restoration of the boat. Today the launch is also supported by the Grimaldi Onlus Foundation and Unicredit through the contribution of Carta Etica 2019. Matteo’s future will be linked to the nascent Delegation of the Italian Naval League of San Giovanni a Teduccio.

The team Admiral, Navy Logistics Commander, Admiral Salvatore Vitiello, the Councilor for Youth Policies and Work of the Municipality of Naples, Chiara Marciani, the Head for the South of UniCredit, Ferdinando Natali, the General Director of the Grimaldi Foundation, Luca Marciani, the President of the Port of Naples, Andrea Annunziata, the Vice President of the Italian Naval League, Admiral Luciano Magnanelli, the General Manager, S&Y Sea &Yachting, Walter Di Palo, a representative of the Juvenile Justice of Campania, the magistrate of the Surveillance Court of Naples, Francesco Chiaromonte, the councilor for Municipal Police and Legality of the Municipality of Naples ANtonio De Iesu, the President of the Surveillance Court, Patrizia Mirra, the president of the Roma Foundation Franco Parasassi.
