This year the Association organized the opening – in Messina of the Church of Gesù and Maria del Buon Viaggio al Ringo – and on Sunday 26, in Reggio Calabria, from the Church of the Holy Christowned byArchconfraternity of the Whitesthanks to the availability of the Regent Commissioner Alessandro Genoese Laboccetta.

L’Arciconfraternita dei Bianchi is the oldest in the cityestablished in 1539 by Paul III Farnese, and its name derives from the fact that the brothers paraded in procession dressed with a white “sack”.

The history of the White church of Reggio Calabria

The Church was destroyed for the first time because it was set on fire in 1594 by the Turkish incursion and then by the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908. The building, rebuilt according to a design by the engineer Tibaldi, has a single nave with the presbytery divided by a triumphal arch on which there is the inscription “AD 1936”; in the background, a reused altar from the old Cathedral. A marble plaque, placed in 1939, on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the foundation of the pious association, commemorates its events.

Some paintings which originally decorated the walls of the naves were recently stolen and, precisely to avoid further thefts, precious sacred silverware from the 18th/19th centuries (a rayed monstrance and 3 chalices) are currently on display in the Diocesan Museum adjacent to the Cathedral .
