PESARO – The splendor of the mosaics of the Cathedral. The windows are larger with 42 square meters more along the nave with new lighting.

The transformation of the central nave of the Cathedral of Pesaro was presented, carried out with the aim of making visible and enhancing the extraordinary historical heritage made up of the mosaics present in the basement of the Cathedral.
The action had as its object the opening of new windows, with walkable glass, which expanded the existing ones over a large stretch, which in turn were replaced with new glass, which over time had become opaque from foot traffic. The LED lighting system is completely new and highlights the drawings of the various paintings in which the composition is divided.

The large transparent surface now presented to the visitor, and the new lighting system, highlight the extraordinary ancient palimpsest present under the floor of the current church, which sees the presence of a mosaic flooring from the 4th/5th century , of the rubble from the destruction of the original early Christian church during the Gothic wars, and finally of the upper mosaic of Byzantine workmanship, dated between the 6th and 12th/13th centuries, belonging to the rebuilt cathedral.
Many scenes are highlighted through the new windows, primarily the so-called ‘Trojan ship’ a unique figuration in the national panorama inspired by the courtly compositions of the medieval period. Then the representation of fish, crustaceans and mermaids to remember the city’s connection with the Adriatic.

The initiative is the result of collaboration between the Archdiocese of Pesaro, the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta, the Scavolini Foundation, under the high supervision of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino. The Scavolini Foundation proposed and financed the work on the occasion of Pesaro 2024, Italian Capital of Culture, which entrusted the interventions to Renco Spa, an international engineering company based in Pesaro.
