Schools in Caserta, the construction site turning point: «In class in September»

The new classrooms of “Giannone” middle school they will be ready to September. Those of the primary school “De Amicis” even before. These are the reassurances received yesterday afternoon from the Municipality to the school management, who have been awaiting official communications on the matter for weeks delivery of works. Between sudden stops, delays and slowdowns, the staff of the two centers and hundreds of families are in fact experiencing a situation of hardship that has continued for over four years.

In the specific case of the lower secondary school, the construction site was interrupted exactly one year ago. The failure to provide, on the part of the Ministryof the expected financing quotas, and the inability of the Municipality to advance the sums, had caused the stop of the works. With the approval of the budget forecast in the Chamber, the administration has now been able to leverage an amount of cash, initially intended for maintenance, to allow the resumption of interventions already scheduled for next Monday. Maximum priority will be given to the wing of the complex intended for classrooms and offices so that they are ready for the new school year. Then the construction site will move to the rear part of the complex but without triggering teaching problems. At least this is what the administration guaranteed in yesterday’s meeting. A real race against time which should allow everyone to return to headquarters five the classes currently housed in the premises of the Episcopal Curia in Piazza Duomo. This is because those spaces will have to be used by a share of former students Lombardo Radicethe primary and nursery school in via Roma which will have to be demolished this summer and then rebuilt with Pnrr funds.

All the other students, however, will probably be hosted in the school complex Piazza Cavour, in the Tescione district, where now – distributed among ten classes – there are the children of De Amicis who, barring further postponements, should finally return to their school in Corso Giannone. Here the problems, linked to infiltrations, began in 2019 and the start of work on the roof only in 2021. According to what was reported by the Municipality’s technicians, the work would finally be completed and in June even the last classrooms will be able to return to the availability of the school.

«Finally, after so many inconveniences, – comments the school director, Maria Bianco – “De Amicis-Giannone” will be able to recover the full functionality of the spaces, with all classes in their own classrooms, renovated environments and laboratories technologically equipped with the new equipment that the school purchased with Pnrr funds. They have been difficult years for everyone, but now – barring unforeseen events – there are the conditions to start again peacefully. I am satisfied with the successful outcome of the meeting with the councilors for public works and public education, Massimiliano Marzo and Enzo Battarra, and I hope that all the reassurances received are translated into concrete facts.”

«The school network of comprehensive institutes in Caserta – says the councilor Battarra – after decades characterized only by individual maintenance interventions, it has begun a process of profound renewal, adaptation and improvement. In a few years Caserta will have safer, more functional and more hospitable schools. This will certainly create adaptation needs for the entire community in the coming times, having to coexist with the necessary building works that will be underway. But politics must look in perspective and our duty is to create school buildings that are suitable for the needs of the new generations.”

And on the transfer of students, the councilor added: «We are examining possible solutions to ensure that everyone has a place in September. The priority is to complete the work at “De Amicis” and “Giannone” to bring back all the student audiences, then we will take care of the students of the former “Lombardo Radice” in via Roma and those of the lower secondary school in via Trent.” The complex in the Acquaviva district will also be demolished shortly and rebuilt with Pnrr funds. According to the latest rumours, it seems that the students will be located in the complex in via Barducci and in via Melvin Jones in the former Saint Gobain building where some sections of the Giannone high school and the San Leucio art institute are already located.
