AI tracking has been enhanced Phlegraean Fieldswith the installation of a new observatory in the marine area of Gulf of Pozzuoliin which the caldera of the super-volcano extends: the monitoring network called Jellyfishwhich will now be placed side by side from a new multiparametric observatory of theVesuvian Observatory of the Ingv, for the study of the underwater hydrothermal degassing process.

The installation, also created thanks to the contribution of Department of Civil Protectionwas made possible thanks to the diving group ofEngvin coordination with the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields.

The affected area was identified in a particular sector of the Gulf of Pozzuoli known as ‘Secca delle Fumose’, already the subject of studies and monitoring and where the installation of other marine scientific instruments is also planned.

It is, in fact, a focal point of Phlegraean thermalism, where already in ancient times the emergence of hot waters and vapors was evident, so much so that it pushed the ancient Romans to build, unique in its kind, an artificial island that allowed take advantage of the healthiness of the phenomenon.

The new marine observatory will allow us to constantly monitor the temperature of the hydrothermal emissions on the seabed, the concentration of carbon dioxide of volcanic origin dissolved in the sea water and the marine current.

All useful parameters for estimating the energy associated with underwater gas emissions and for monitoring any variations. This new instrumentation, therefore, strengthens the infrastructure already existing in the submerged sector of the caldera, which presents objective logistical difficulties. Phlegraean Fields.
