On the occasion of the anniversary of the historic Battle of Legnano, Poste Italiane will participate in the celebrations with a special philatelic postmark.
The philatelic postmark for the Palio di Legnano is back
The initiative, organized by the Legnanese family with the aim of maintaining a lasting memory of the historical re-enactment event, will take place on Sunday 26 May in Villa Jucker (via Matteotti 3), headquarters of the association. Poste Italiane will be present at the event with a station where it will be possible to request the cancellation from 9.30 to 1.30. The cancellation is made in a round format and reproduces the event’s coat of arms. A series of three limited edition postcards has been prepared for the anniversary.
A celebration counted among the historical Italian events
The Palio di Legnano, until 2005 “Sagra del Carroccio”, is a traditional festival counted among the historical Italian events. It has taken place in Legnano since 1935 to commemorate the battle of the same name fought on 29 May 1176 in the surroundings of the city between the troops of the Lombard League and the imperial army of Federico Barbarossa. This year’s event falls on Sunday 26 May and the day’s program is particularly rich, given that this year’s Palio is that of the centenary of Legnano’s recognition of the title of city.
The figurative stamp will then be available for two months
The figurative stamp, after use on May 26th, will be available at the philatelic counter in Legnano, in via Palestro 30, for the following 60 days and will then be deposited at the Historical Museum of Communication in Rome to become part of the postal history collection.
