Letter to the elderly to protect themselves from scams

Stop scams targeting the elderly, 758 over 85 year olds who live alone will receive at home a letter from the police commissioner of Ancona Cesare Capocasa and the mayor Daniela Ghergo with the three recipes to defend themselves from criminals. The “Safer together” project was presented yesterday in the Municipality by the commissioner Capocasa and the mayor Ghergo, in the presence of the director of the police station Angelo Sebastianelli and the councilor for social services and fragility Maurizio Serafini. “This is – they explained – the information and awareness campaign conducted in synergy by the police headquarters and the Municipality in the fight against scams against the elderly: a widespread social phenomenon”. The initiative, conceived by the police commissioner Capocasa, which the Municipality immediately joined, has as its objective “the most vulnerable, i.e. the elderly over 85 who live alone and who are therefore the most exposed to scams and scams”. The letter which in some cases will be delivered ‘door to door’, contains three clear and simple instructions, but capable of protecting the elderly: “Do not open the door to strangers, do not give telephone information to strangers and in case of emergency contact the single emergency number 112”. Mayor Ghergo thanked Capocasa for choosing the city of the paper as the first city in the Province, after the capital, from which to start the campaign. “The territory of the Municipality of Fabriano – explained the mayor – is particularly exposed to this insidious and hateful crime, because being a municipality in the internal area it has a higher than average percentage of elderly people and because, having the largest territory in the region, as well as being mountainous, the elderly people who live there, especially those who are alone, are more isolated, more difficult to monitor and reach, and therefore less protectable, as demonstrated by the fact that in recent weeks many elderly people have fallen victim to scams: the phenomenon is spreading exponentially.” “The paper letter – added Capocasa – will certainly be read because the elderly always goes to retrieve their correspondence in the letterbox of their home. Then, with the presence of the local police, we will also visit them at home. It is an approach new awareness, but also a closeness, a listening to people who live with so much loneliness. “If my elderly parents had had this letter – added Serafini – perhaps they would have avoided the scam they instead suffered. These episodes also lead to a serious loss of self-esteem”.
