Blood, 5,836 donations: «Net increase in 2023» – Teramo

TERAMO. Teramo rhymes with solidarity. This is demonstrated by Fidas data relating to the units of blood collected in 2023 at the Mazzini hospital: 5,836, 467 more than the previous year. Furthermore, active and new donors are also growing, demonstrating an increasingly widespread sensitivity to the topic which is also infecting the new generations. The results were announced by Fidas Teramo on the occasion of the association’s assembly meeting on Tuesday evening in the “Lino Di Patre” Donor House for the approval of the 2023 budget. The president Gabriella Di Egidio illustrated the details by reporting a favorable picture with respect to the activity of the association which speaks of 3,912 active donors in the past year, compared to 3,785 in 2022 (+127). The figure for new donors is also encouraging: 362 people made their first donation, demonstrating the constant promotion and awareness-raising activity carried out by Fidas in the area, especially towards young people who constitute the future pool of blood donors.
The gender gap (inherent among blood donors for physiological and organic reasons) is decreasing: among the new members 166 are women and 192 men. Furthermore, the gap between active male donors (2,665, +4% compared to 2022) and women (1,247, +1%) remains high. Among the age groups, 29% of active donors are those between 18 and 35 years old, 48% are between 36 and 55 years old and 23% are over 56. In 2023, 5,836 units of blood were collected, of which 5,426 of whole blood, 356 of plasma, 12 of platelets and 42 of multicomponents or other. Among the numerous activities organized by Fidas of Teramo in 2023, some of which are now consolidated and recurring, the Interregional Fidas Center, South and Islands meeting stands out which took place in the city in October, in which representatives of 23 participated federated associations. The event had not been held in Teramo since 2004 and was an opportunity for debate on medical-scientific, organizational and promotional topics regarding blood donation, the culture of solidarity and volunteering. «The numbers that I illustrated in my report to the members are a source of great satisfaction for me and for the entire board of directors», comments President Di Egidio, «we record better data than the national average. It is a sign that we are on the right track and that we have now put the dark period of the pandemic behind us. I especially thank all the donors, the beating heart of our association. Fidas Teramo will continue to carry out its task of promoting blood donation with ever greater commitment through targeted campaigns, events, awareness initiatives, competitions aimed in particular at the school world because it is young people that we want to address with ever greater attention so that they understand the value of solidarity and volunteering”, concluded the Fidas president.
