Lest we forget: Bagheria remembers the Capaci massacre

At 5.56pm on May 23, 1992 the seismographs of the Monte Cammarata geophysical observatory on the island recorded a strong shock wave. It was not caused by an earthquake, but by the very powerful explosion that killed the judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the three men of their escort Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro.

32 years later, the Municipality of Bagheria cannot help but remember that tragic 23 May 1992 when the mafia committed an act of unprecedented barbarity along the A29 motorway, near Capaci.

Having to respect the level playing field, we will not report any declaration from the current administrators of the Municipality of Bagheria but we publish, in memory of the victims and their value, the declaration of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella.

«The Capaci attack was an attack that the mafia knowingly wanted to carry out on Italian democracy. A criminal strategy, which after a few weeks replicated the same, inhumane horror in via D’Amelio. The reaction of the institutions and the Italian people was firm. The result was a mobilization of consciences. The life lesson of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino they became part of the best ethics of the Republic.

Thirty-two years after that tragic May 23rd, it is necessary to first of all remember the sacrifice of those who were barbarically killed: Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo, Vito Schifani. Together with them we remember Paolo Borsellino, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Walter Eddie Cosina, Vincenzo Li Muli, Claudio Traina. Witnesses of legality, whose name remains marked with indelible characters in our history.

Their names are an affirmation of commitment to a definitive victory over the mafia cancer and our heartfelt thoughts go to their family members who preserve their memory and moral legacy.

As they claimed Falcone and Borsellino, the Republic has shown that the mafia can be defeated and that it is destined to end. The commitment to fighting it never fails. Attempts to pollute civil society and intimidation of economic operators are always lurking. The Day of Legality that is being celebrated is intended to be a sign of common responsibility. It is necessary to maintain high vigilance. The institutional antibodies, the social mobilization to prevent mafia organizations from finding support in gray and compliant areas, cannot be weakened. The legacy of Falcone and Borsellino is a living heritage that belongs to the entire national community. Carrying on their work means working for a better society.”
