A meeting of the provincial committee for public order and security was held at the Government Palace during which the situation of order and security in the province and in particular in the capital was examined.

The meeting, coordinated by the refect, Francesco Esposito, was attended by the police commissioner of Salerno, Giancarlo Conticchio, the provincial commander of the Carabinieri, Filippo Melchiorre, the provincial commander of the Guardia di Finanza, Oriol De Luca, the mayor of the Municipality of Salerno, Vincenzo Napoli accompanied by the councilor for safety, Claudio Tringali and the commander of the Municipal Police, Rosario Battipaglia, the manager of the Salerno Traffic Police Section, Vera Galli Lami, Anas SpA, (represented by the engineer Massimiliano Campanella), responsible for the A2 section from the Mediterranean, accompanied by other Company executives.

“From a careful analysis of the data on the trend of crime it emerged that, in the first months of this year, the number of thefts and robberies recorded is in line with that of the same periods of previous years; nevertheless, in the last weeks there has been a sudden surge in the phenomenon, with a sequence of thefts close in time, concentrated in some areas and with methods of execution that have fueled a perception of insecurity – we read in the note from the Prefecture of Salerno – There is awareness that the Police Forces dedicate themselves with perseverance and maximum commitment to the prevention and repression of these crimes and that previously, on many occasions, the perpetrators of the crimes have been brought to justice even in the latest episode which occurred in the city; of the patrols prevented the thieves from carrying out the theft and only the circumstance that at that moment they were busy detecting a road accident prevented the criminals from being caught in the act”.

Not only. “The monitoring and attention on the issue of public safety in the city of Salerno, as well as in the province, is constant, so much so that the Provincial committee meets every week and in the last meetings has approved 59 projects of municipalities admitted to participate in the tender from the Ministry of the Interior for new video surveillance systems and a project already financed with public funds for the benefit of the Municipality of Salerno, to implement actions aimed at preventing and combating situations of degradation, illegality and to strengthen the video surveillance systems and the interconnection between the operations room of the municipal police and those of the police forces. In today’s session, to provide a further response to the perception of insecurity recorded following the repeated thefts, the provincial committee envisaged a series of prevention measures. In particular, territorial control services will be intensified with the increase in dedicated patrols, thanks to the availability offered by the Ministry of the Interior which accepted, on an extraordinary and temporary basis, the request for the use of units from the Crime Prevention Department which they will operate starting next week. These resources, which will be added to those already present in the municipal territory, will be located in the areas that have been most exposed to predatory crimes, allowing for an increase in the patrols used in the coordinated control of the territory, for each surveillance shift. An operational module has also been developed to encourage the dynamic use of patrols coming from other areas and, in case of need, to have them converge quickly on the place where the crime is taking place”, as established in the of committee.

“Furthermore, it was noted that it would be appropriate to free the resources of the State Police Forces from the detection of road accidents, even during night hours, to allow them to be able to carry out the functions of crime prevention and repression as a priority. It was requested the maximum collaboration of the Municipal Police of Salerno for the specific activities of its competence. The prefecture has contacted the national security manager of ABI to raise awareness among credit institutions to strengthen passive defense measures in compliance with the commitments made with the signing of the “memorandum of understanding for the prevention of crime” against banks, signed between the Prefecture and the ABI in 2021, as part of the national framework agreement. In this regard, the need was highlighted in particular to invest in video surveillance systems; in anti-burglary/anti-intrusion sensors; in sensors to prevent the introduction of gas or explosives inside ATMs. This last request emerges from the observation that, in the last hits carried out, these devices were not present and functioning. Yesterday the Salerno Police Headquarters raised awareness among private security institutions by inviting them to supervise sensitive targets with the utmost attention, in particular banks and ATMs, promptly reporting suspicious situations. Finally, thanks to the collaboration of Anas SpA and the Traffic Police, a program of interventions is being studied to set up video surveillance systems, equipped with license plate readers, in the sections of the motorway network without barriers and toll booths. The new infrastructures, currently under construction, will serve to equip the Police Force with useful tools for both prevention and investigative activity in all those cases in which criminal groups from other geographical areas use the motorway network as an escape route. Similar contacts are also underway with the managers of the other motorway networks”, concludes the note from the Prefecture.
