Elderly woman missing in Torella: investigation into murder and concealment of body closed

“There is no evidence sufficient to hypothesize criminal conduct against third parties.” With this motivation, the judge for preliminary investigations Roberta D’Onofrio closed the investigations into the disappearance of Maria Domenica Conte, the elderly woman who vanished into thin air four years ago in Torella del Sannio. The mystery surrounding the woman who was 82 years old at the time therefore remains unsolved. Last summer the judge ordered new investigations into the crimes of murder and concealment of a corpse, ordering further investigations. In recent months, the Prosecutor’s Office has heard from some people about whom suspicions had been raised. At the end of this work, however, no new elements emerged and so it was archived. However, the family continues to ask for light to be shed on the matter. The elderly woman’s daughter, Liliana Meffe, together with the Penelope association, in recent days, after having received the notification of the dismissal, is preparing a new missing person report which will shortly be presented at the police station in Campobasso. “I’m not giving up – she explains – my mother couldn’t leave alone, someone made her disappear”.

Maria Domenica Conte disappeared on August 31, 2020. She was last seen walking on a road not far from her home. She could not have walked away alone because she walked with the help of a stick, therefore with difficulty. At the time of her disappearance, the countryside around the house was traversed inch by inch by hundreds of people for days. The Prosecutor’s Office, after having initially investigated only her disappearance, then hypothesized a more serious fact: the crimes of murder and concealment of a corpse. The hypothesis, also supported by the old woman’s daughter, was that of a collision by a car and the subsequent decision of whoever was driving to make the lifeless body disappear to avoid having to answer for that death. But now the archiving has arrived. No culprit, but the case is not over and with the new complaint arriving, a new chapter opens.
