Work stress is growing by 100.6% in Puglia, psychological distress is mainly concentrated in the province of Bari (38.8%). The numbers are also confirmed by the data collected by the online psychology service ‘Unobravo’ as part of the analysis conducted to investigate the risk of burnout in Italy and the psychological distress related to work.

According to the analyzes carried out through research, in Puglia the categories most affected by work stress are women (64.1%) and young workers (66.5%). The regional increase reflects the Italian panorama: in Italy psychological discomfort related to work is growing by 109.7% and 8 out of 10 Italians could be at risk of burnout.

The data on work-related psychological distress processed by Unobravo refer to a sample of over 82,000 people, part of the user base of the company that offers an online psychology service. The data from the burnout screening test processed by Unobravo refer to a sample of over 11,500 people.

The numbers collected show how at a provincial level the majority of those who declare having psychological problems related to the work sphere are concentrated in the province of Bari (38.8%), followed by Lecce (17.1%), Taranto ( 13.8%), Foggia (11.4%), Brindisi (10.2%) and Barletta-Andria-Trani (8.7%).

In Puglia, it is mainly women who seek psychological support for work-related problems, which alone represent 64.1% of the total, while the remaining 35.9% is made up of men. The data is aligned with the national average (66.3% against 33.7%), as is the evidence relating to age groups: even in Puglia, those who are most affected are those who are in the first phase of their professional career : 66.5% are between 25 and 34 years old, while 19.1% are between 35 and 44 years old. The 45-60 year old, 18-24 and over 60 age groups were all below 8%.

The situation in Puglia shows a worrying picture, which also confirms the national trend. More and more people complain of work-related psychological discomfort, which, if left untreated, can lead to physical symptoms and serious conditions that negatively impact and interfere with people’s lives, such as burnout syndrome – explains Valeria Fiorenza Perris, psychotherapist and Clinical Director of Unobravo – LThe syndrome develops in four phases: enthusiasm and unrealistic expectations, stagnation, frustration and apathy. Recognizing them as soon as possible is essential to request, in time and before the syndrome has a serious impact on one’s life, the intervention and support of a psychologist or psychotherapist, figures who can help re-establish a balance between private life and the professional one“.
