Pogacar overtakes the 7′ lead, Tiberi consolidates 5th place

Tadej Pogacar attacked forcefully with 1500 meters remaining at the finish line of the sixteenth stage and has vinto the hamlet that ended uphill to Monte Pana near Selva di Val Gardena. The Slovenian champion thus achieved his fifth victory at the 2024 Giro d’Italia and has strengthened the pink jersey. The captain of the UAE Emirates is increasingly in control of the general classification, where he is now leads with more than seven minutes advantage over his closest pursuers.

Tadej Pogacar clearly stands out in the rankings with a 7’18” advantage over the Colombian Daniel Martinez, which today regained second place. The British Geraint Thomas he slipped to third place at 7’40”, while the Australian Ben O’Connor was fourth at 8’42”. Antonio Tiberi promptly recovered after the crisis he had on Sunday in Livigno and gained precious ground against O’Connor, Thomas and the Dutch Thymena Arensman, confirming himself in fifth place 10’09” from the top and strengthening his white jersey of the best young man.

Below is the general classification of the Giro d’Italia 2024 at the end of the sixteenth stage. Tomorrow (Wednesday 22 May) the seventeenth stage will take place: 159 km from Selva di Val Gardena to Passo del Brocon, a challenging Dolomite day with an uphill finish.
