“When the ASL doctor refused to visit a prisoner, a violent protest broke out, resulting in moments of excitement with the breaking of some windows, the splinters of which slightly injured two police officers. There was no scuffle or aggression by part of the prisoners towards the officers and now the protest has stopped”. The director of the Benevento prison, Gianfranco Marcello, tells ANSA this regarding the disorders that occurred in the prison.

“We are experiencing a difficult situation due to the overcrowding of the prisons – adds Marcello -. We have almost double the number of prisoners we should have and we manage the situation with quite a few difficulties, thanks exclusively to the heroic commitment of the staff”.

“After the protest the inmates themselves collaborated in cleaning and tidying up the premises”, concluded the director.

The two injured officers were treated in hospital and returned home to undergo further checks tomorrow.
