59-year-old arrested, ‘shots fired by mistake’

Salvatore Vassalli, a 59-year-old construction worker arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder, admitted during the interrogation that he had had a fight with the victim, Mauro Di Giacomo. However, Vassalli claimed that the gunshots were fired accidentally while he was holding the weapon.

The physiotherapist Mauro Di Giacomo, 63 years old, was shot dead on the evening of 18 December 2023in the car park near his home in the Poggiofranco district of Bari. Before the judge for preliminary investigations in Bari, Vassalli did not confess to the crime but tried to mitigate his responsibilities by providing his version of the facts.

Vassalli’s lawyers, Michele D’Ambra and Carmine Sarcinelli, did not ask for the mitigation of the precautionary measure. However, from the investigations of the Flying Squad, coordinated by prosecutor Matteo Soave, and from the medical-legal report, it emerges that the gunshots were fired with precision, a detail that contradicts the version provided by Vassalli.

According to the prosecution, Vassalli killed Di Giacomo because he was convinced that the physiotherapist, due to a wrong maneuver in 2019, had caused a slight disability (3%) in his daughter’s arm. In 2020, Vassalli had filed a lawsuit for damages, but, disappointed by justice, he decided to take personal revenge. He is now accused of murder aggravated by premeditation and cruelty.
