On Wednesday 15th the city of Savona hosted the famous international meeting on the athletics field of the “Giulio Ottolia” multi-sports complex in which athletes of international caliber have competed for over 13 editions. Among the athletes competing there are also two from Aosta Valley: Eleonora Marchiando (1997, CS Carabinieri) in the 400 Hs H76 and Corinne Challancin (1999, Atl. Firenze Marathon) in the triple jump. Also present is the world silver medalist in the shot put as well as the seasonal world leader with the measurement of 22.88 m Leonardo Fabbri (Aeronautica Militare), the Italian record holder in the 100 m and the world bronze in the 60 m indoor Zaynab Dosso (Fiamme azzurre) and Mattia Furlani (Fiamme Oro) Italian indoor long jump record holder and indoor world vice champion in Glasgow 2024.

Eleonora Marchiando places 3rdto in 56″26 arriving ahead of training partner Linda Olivieri, 4thto in 56”36, in the race won by Ukraine Anna Ryzhykova in 55”83. Commenting on the race, Marchiando says: “It was a good, very tight race. I’m happy to have reacted after the 400 in Milan last week and to have found good sensations again. I had the wrong rhythm between the 5th and 7th obstacle, a point I will have to work on, which slowed me down, but I finished well at the end. Since it’s the first race, I’m satisfied.”

Corinne Challancin is 8to in the triple jump competition with a jump of 12.78 m on a rain-soaked platform which, however, did not stop the meeting. “The weather conditions were not optimal” says Challancin “but the main problem is that I changed my deadlift leg in December and I still have a lot to sort out, above all I still have to get used to jumping with the full run-up. I hope to fix the jump for the next meetings!”

Also worth highlighting are the important results obtained by other Italians during the meeting. In the space of five minutes Savona was the scene of two Italian records: that of Zaynab Dosso (Fiamme Azzurre) who improved the Italian record twice: in heat 11″12, taking 2 hundredths off the record she shared with Manuela Levorato and in the final she went to win with an amazing 11″02 very close to the 11″ wall. Leonardo Fabbri, after two throws under 22 m, throws the weight above 4 times and on the last attempt throws a shoulder throw to 22.95 m, improving Alessandro Andrei’s record from 1987 by 4 cm and becoming 5th in the rankings all-time world specialty. In the long jump competition Mattia Furlani (Fiamme oro) jumps to 8.36 m which represents the Under 19 World Record.
