THREE QUESTIONS TO…

NICOLA MOSCONI,HEAD OF POWER UNIT TRACK OPERATIONS

1. How is the Imola track from a power unit point of view?
Imola is a circuit with medium sensitivity to energy, it is located more or less halfway between Monte Carlo and Spa-Francorchamps, which effectively represent the extremes. There is only one DRS zone, on the main straight. The power unit’s energy distribution strategies must take this into account, to maximize the probability of overtaking and minimize the probability of being overtaken. The drivers exploit the curbs quite aggressively here, especially at the Acque Minerali curve and at the Variante Alta, and it is therefore necessary to choose the correct gear and the most suitable trajectory to avoid reliability problems that can be due to over-revving.

2. What are the most important challenges for the riders and the team in Imola?
It is an “old school” circuit, characterized by ups and downs, curves and rather technical braking. It is therefore important that the driver feels at ease straight away and that he can complete the free practice program to gain more and more confidence and therefore find the car’s limit. To do this you need a reliable machine and strategies focused from the first km in order to satisfy the driver’s needs as much as possible. This is a rule that is always valid, but here it takes on even greater weight.

3. Tell us about yourself. You were born near here, can you tell us about your journey here in Scuderia Ferrari HP?
This is in fact my home GP, since I live a few dozen km from Imola. I graduated in Bologna and did my thesis at Ferrari, then remaining to work in the company. Initially I followed the engine tests on the bench and I began to gain experience as an engine engineer in the test team. In 2013 I spent my first year on the track with customer teams, to whom we supplied first the engine and then from 2014 the power unit. A few years later I joined the racing team working as an engine engineer for Kimi Raikkonen and then for Charles Leclerc. For a year and a half I have been responsible for power unit operations on the track for the Scuderia Ferrari HP team.

GRAND PRIX FOR MADE IN ITALY AND EMILIA-ROMAGNA: NUMBERS AND CURIOSITIES

7. The so-called sister cities of Romagna, of which Imola is part with its 69,000 inhabitants. The other main centers of Romagna are Cesena (96,000), Faenza (59,000), Forlì (116,000), Lugo (32,000), Ravenna (156,000) e Rimini (149,000). The people of Romagna have invented a nursery rhyme about this particular “kinship”: this is the version in Imola dialect. Rèmin da navighè; Cantè Cesena; Balle furlè; Ravenna from magnè; Lugh from imbrujè; Fenza da lavurè; Jèmula da fè love (Rimini for sailing; Cesena for singing, Forlì for dancing; Ravenna for eating; Lugo for cheating; Faenza for working; Imola for making love).

30. The years since the passing of Roland Ratzenerger and Ayrton Senna, which occurred in Imola on 30 April and 1 May 1994 respectively during the San Marino Grand Prix. Last May 1st the circuit remembered the two drivers with a ceremony attended by 20,000 people, including the foreign ministers of Austria, Brazil and Italy, as well as Ratzenberger’s parents and Senna’s nephew, Bruno. To remember the Brazilian champion there is also a monument located inside the racetrack near the Curva del Tamburello, which was fatal to him. It is a bronze statue depicting him, two meters high, the work of the artist Stefano Pierotti of Pietrasanta, inaugurated on 26 April 1997.

96. The sports facilities in the Imola area including the Enzo and Dino Ferrari racetrack. This city is among the most active in Italy. According to research by the regional sports department, among Imola residents under 65, one in two claims to practice sports at least once a week.

241. The points won in Imola by Scuderia Ferrari, more than anyone else (followed by McLaren at 212 and Williams at 151). Of these, 102 were hit by Michael Schumacher than with his seven successes – six of which with Ferrari – is also the most successful driver at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari Autodrome.

1951. The year in which the concept of “Made in Italy” was born. It was February 12th when Giovanni Battista Giorgini, an Italian aristocrat and skilled entrepreneur, who had perceived international interest in the work of Italian fashion ateliers, decided to bring together stylists, the press and buyers of the sector in a single event. Thus was born the “First Italian High Fashion Show”, organized in his Villa Torrigiani in Florence: 18 models who paraded, coming from various Italian fashion houses, including the Sorelle Fontana, the Carosa atelier of Princess Giovanna Caracciolo, Alberto Fabiani , the Simonetta atelier of Duchess Visconti, Emilio Schuberth, Jole Veneziani, the Vanna tailoring shop of Manette Valente, Vita Noberasco, Germana Marucelli, Emilio Pucci, Giorgio Avolio, “La Tessitrice dell’isola”, Mirsa and Franco Bertoli. It was a success and from that day onwards we started talking about “Made in Italy”.
