Ladin, Cimbrian and Friulian representatives were heard

(Arv) Venice 8 May. 2024 – The Culture commission of the Veneto Council met with representatives of the Cimbrian, Friulian and Ladin linguistic minorities. These are the first institutional hearings on the application of regional law no. 30/2021 “Promotion of linguistic minorities present in the Veneto Region”, which updated and replaced law 73 of 1994 on the promotion of ethnic and linguistic minorities in Veneto. In Veneto there are three linguistic minorities, distributed across around seventy municipalities: Ladin, in the Belluno area; the Cimbrian, which is part of the Germanic stock and is in use between the provinces of Belluno, Treviso, Vicenza and Verona; and Friulian, in the Portogruarese area. The Ladin section of Comelgo, the Union of Ladin de la Rocia, the Cadore a Sera section, the Val Bois section, the Cadore de Medo, the Aut Cordol section, the Conca Agordina section, the Zoldo section, the Federation of ladins de Souramont, the Curatorium Cimbricum Veronense, the Cimbrian Cultural Institute, the Cimbri del Cansiglio association, the Fogolar furlan ‘Antonio Panciera ‘ of the Eastern Veneto between Livenza and Tagliamento, the Timènt group. For the protection and promotion of the Cimbrians, Ladins and Friulians, the Veneto Region provided 135 thousand euros in contributions last year, of which 70 thousand were distributed among the representative bodies of the Ladins, Cimbrians and Friulians of the Portogruarese area, 15 thousand euros to the Province of Belluno for the international conference on Alpine toponymy, 30 thousand for the sociolinguistic study of linguistic communities and their evolution and 20 thousand for 11 projects carried out by municipalities and associations to support the cultural identities of the territory: initiatives to support dialects, theatrical events, reprints of collections, poetry competitions, language courses. At the center of the considerations expressed to the regional councilors by the Federations of the Ladin cultural unions, by the Committees of the Cimbrian associations and the Friulian cultural associations of Portogruarese is the need to preserve and pass on one’s historical and cultural identity, the meaning of being and feeling like a minority, relations with the public administration, actions to protect and enhance one’s cultural heritage in particular towards the younger generations, relations between linguistic minorities in the regional context and in the broader national panorama.
