Fulvio Collovati, former AC Milan and Inter footballer, spoke exclusively to the microphones of the AllMilan.it editorial team. During the interview many topics were touched on, from the situation of the Rossoneri bench to the summer transfer market. Below are his words:
Currently the hottest topic is that of the coach, if they asked you to choose, who would you entrust the AC Milan bench to next season?
“I would like to say one thing, first of all we start with a coach who will leave Milan and leave them in second place, so you have to hire a coach who has to do better. I frankly don’t understand all this criticism towards Pioli, he won the scudetto two years ago and is second in the standings. Perhaps there is a bit of confusion in society, there are no clear ideas. Picking on Pioli seems unfair to me, if you have to take someone better than Pioli you have to take a winner. All the names that have been mentioned so far have left me with some doubts. The only suitable name is Conte”.

If they don’t manage to catch Conte, would you stop Pioli?
“A cycle is over, you have to get a winner, you have to get Conte, the others are all question marks.”
Fans often need to find a culprit. Who do you most attribute the mistakes of an uninspiring season to, the club, coach or players?
“Uninspiring season? We need to understand. What do you want to ask a team that finishes second? Not very exciting because first of all Inter won with many points behind them. Second because he left the Europa League and was a target and the fans didn’t like this. Then due to a season full of injuries, it seems to me that even in the club the ideas are not very clear on who should decide, the choices on the coach, first you go to one then it goes to another. All this gives no certainty to the protesting fan.”
Is the change of direction by the club after the fans’ protests synonymous with intelligence or weakness?
“A strong club is not influenced, if a strong club has decided to turn to a coach it does so because it is aware of having chosen the right person, without being influenced by moods in the market”
For footballers, how difficult is it to find motivation already knowing the end of the season? And if so, how can they be found?
“There are now two days left until the end of the championship and knowing that a coach is leaving at the end of the season isn’t easy, you have to maintain second place and that’s it. There are no more stimuli. As a player, I have always experienced them like this: there is a desire on the part of the players to show off in order to try to stay, to change the club’s mind. I see a discouragement that I don’t like”
Inter wins the scudetto in the derby, as a former player of both I ask you what it tastes like and what weight it has for the two teams?
“The weight is that Inter, regardless of the derby, have proven to be the strongest. If you win the scudetto on second place with so many points behind you, as Napoli demonstrated last year, you kill the championship. This made all the others weaker and I’m talking about the second, third and fourth. Maybe it made Milan even weaker because if you lose both derbies you show that you’re a step behind.”
Market expectations and Ibra’s role, Collovati has his say!
At what points should we intervene on the market?
“First of all, by hiring a winning coach and you have to intervene on the market. Is Giroud leaving? You have to take two attackers. You need to strengthen the defense, the defense has conceded a lot of goals this year. You have to take national level players, you can’t think of showing up with such a weak defense. Championships are won with the strongest defenses. So you have to take two attackers, two defenders and a midfielder. We need 5 players to make the leap in quality.”
I want to leave you with a provocation, will Ibra be more of a Marotta or more of a Zanetti in this club?
“Probably Ibra himself expected to have decision-making power. Now let’s leave aside Zanetti and Marotta who have different roles, but it is clear that if you take Ibra with those expectations that were there, evidently he knows that the expectations were different towards him compared to what we are witnessing”.
