LECCE/BRINDISI – One of the proceedings on the threats received by the Lecce court judge Maria Francesca Mariano from Pancrazio Carrino, the 42-year-old from San Pancrazio Salentino (Brindisi) who the same investigating judge arrested as part of the investigation called ” The Wolf”, about the Lamendola-Cantanna clan.
What determined a new beginning was the recognition of the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method to the original charges – of illegal carrying of weapons and objects capable of offending and violence or threats to a public official or to a person in charge of a public service, to force him to carry out a act contrary to one’s duties – which rendered the monocratic court before which the accused ended up following the direct summons for trial incompetent to proceed.
In short, having taken note of the modification which entails a different procedural process (with the obligation to schedule a preliminary hearing and a possible hearing, in case of failure to choose a special procedure, before a panel of judges), this morning the judge of the Potenza court sent the documents back to the Prosecutor’s Office.
The decision was learned by Carrino, connected by videoconference from the Terni prison, alongside his lawyer Valentina Aragona of the Rome Bar who had initially obtained a favorable opinion to negotiate eight months of imprisonment, converted into public utility work. But then, the Prosecutor’s Office itself had done an about-face, even increasing the “dose” with the modification of the charge.
Threats in Lecce prison
The episodes covered by the proceedings concern those that occurred on 30 August and 31 August 2023 in the Lecce prison. Here, Carrino would have brandished a sharp metal object to prevent the prison police staff from taking him back to his cell after his hour of exercise, and would have given one of the inspectors, during the interrogation with the judge, the awl and a sheet where the name of the latter was written.
The 42-year-old has never shown any sign of repentance. On the contrary. In the last hearing, he made a point of renewing his threats towards the judge, shouting: “The investigating judge Mariano must watch her back” (here, all the details)”.
These words have certainly not been ignored. The documents were sent to the Prosecutor’s Office, so that further proceedings could be opened against the man, the same one who, by his admission, pretended to want to collaborate with the justice system in order to meet the prosecutor Carmen Ruggiero (owner of the “The Wolf” investigations ) and cut her jugular (here, the complete news).
The attribution of sexual violence to the origin of hatred
According to what the accused reported, the reason for his hatred for prosecutors and investigating judges is found in the precautionary custody order resulting from the investigation into the Lamendola-Cantanna clan, where an episode of sexual violence for which he was held responsible was reported.
This accusation from which he cannot defend himself since it is not contested against him, read while he was behind bars, would have led him first to attempt suicide and then to unleash his anger against the two magistrates. Carrino himself said it during the interrogation in which he clarified that he had never had any real intention of collaborating with justice.
Assisted by the Rome Bar lawyer Valentina Aragona, during the preliminary hearing of “The Wolf”, the 42-year-old made spontaneous statements to deny this circumstance.
The same woman believed to be the victim of that terrible abuse was heard last April 30 as a defense witness in the abbreviated trial and denied having ever suffered violence from the accused, adding that he was with her on the evening of the attempted murder, for which according to the investigators he was instead responsible in collaboration with others.
