Ravenna opens with Muti and I Wiener

If on Saturday 11 May it is a splendid friendship in music – that between Riccardo Muti and the Wiener Philharmoniker – that shines on the opening evening of Ravenna Festival 2024, in the sky of the XXXV edition of the event two conductors also shine for the first time in the Byzantine city. Kirill Petrenko leads the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester to celebrate Bruckner on the bicentenary of his birth with his Symphony no. 5; Simon Rattle instead leads the Chamber Orchestra of Europe through the Central European seasons, from Schubert to Dvořák, from Mahler to Bartók. Muti returns to the podium of his Orchestra Cherubini – which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year – for two events: the concert with the clarinettist Simone Nicoletta and the project The ways of Friendshipwith which the summer itinerary of the Festival culminates on July 9th in Lampedusa.

Among the traveling companions of a program that combines the routes of the great tradition with explorations in less frequented musical landscapes, there are the Philip Glass Ensemble and the Orchestra della Toscana for the Qatsi Trilogy by Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass, David Fray and Renaud Capuçon, Michele Campanella, Filippo Gorini, Giovanni Sollima, Mario Brunello, Ian Bostridge and Julius Drake for a tribute to Lord Byron and his connection with Ravenna.
