The calendar of proposals of the Institute of Renaissance Studies of Ferrara continues with an unmissable appointment, Monday 13 May 2024, at 5.30 pm, at Palazzo Schifanoia (via Scandiana 23, Ferrara), dedicated to the extraordinary frescoed cycle of the Salone dei Mesi of the same Palazzo Schifanoia, which, with its mysterious astrological depictions, represents the most precious and secret place of the early Renaissance.
Here, through all possible articulations, the cultural texture of an entire era is at work, unfolding in its auroral moment. Even today, we continue to be “enchanted” by this unique and refined pictorial cycle, as happened to the great cultural historian Aby Warburg, who was the first to identify the source of the astrological band in the Latin version of the “Introduction to astronomy” by the Persian scientist and astrologer Albumasar.
Marco Bertozzion the occasion of the new edition of his volume “The tyranny of the stars. The astrological frescoes of Palazzo Schifanoia” (Sillabe Editore), and the philosopher Massimo Cacciari they will dialogue starting from the memorable interpretation of Aby Warburg, who loved to define himself as the “continuer” of Jacob Burckhardt, the famous author of “Renaissance civilizations in Italy” (1860).
The great “mural talisman” of the Salone dei Mesi, an inextricable link of astronomical rationality and oracular astrology, appears to be the repository of the fascinating and disturbing alliance of logic and magic, as Warburg reminded us in his wonderful contribution “Italian art and international astrology in the Schifanoia Palace in Ferrara” (1912).
An unmissable appointment with the Venetian philosopher, who exceptionally returns to Ferrara, after several years of absence, for a conversation with the director of the Institute of Renaissance Studies, one of the leading experts on the “star geometries” of the Salone dei Mesi.
The initiative organized by the Institute of Renaissance Studies in collaboration with the Ancient Art museums of Ferrara and the Ferrara Arte Foundation.
