Reggio Calabria hosts the 4th edition of the national conference on deafness

“Provide an updated scientific framework on deafness and the various medical, educational, social and healthcare issues relating to it”. This is the objective of the fourth national conference on deafness organized in Reggio Calabria from 10 to 12 May 2024 by the National Deaf Body, ENS Headquarters in collaboration with the ENS Calabria Regional Council and the ENS Reggio Calabria Provincial Section. “New perspectives between scientific progress and social protection. Medical, psychological, educational and rehabilitative aspects”: this is the title of the event which will address various themes over two days starting from reflections on epidemiological data on deafness, on the latest genetic research and on stem cells in the auditory and vestibular organs of the inner ear, but during the fourth conference there will also be space to address the topics of screening, diagnoses, cochlear implants and prostheses, the medical-legal aspects of deafness, modal bilingualism, LIS in educational and school environments, but also rehabilitation perspectives for children with deafness and new technologies available for deaf people. May 12th will be dedicated to cultural and social events, celebrating the 82nd year of the foundation of the ENS (1942-2024)

A conference “in continuity with the previous conferences in Rome (2008), Verona (2010) and Naples (2020) – explain the organizers and the cav. Camillo Galluccio, member of the Board of Directors operating in the Healthcare area and coordinator responsible for the conference, based on the latest scientific research, socio-cultural perspectives and medico-legal updates in the specific sectors of deafness”.

According to the Ens, deafness is “a disability that cannot be seen – continues a note from the organization -, for this reason its severity and the socio-cultural and communicative consequences that it entails are often underestimated, which often lead to discrimination and marginalization of the deaf person. Information, communication, education, work, well-being are inalienable rights of the deaf person, rights for which we must fight together, beyond any form of ideology and prejudice”.

During the two days of work, adds the note, “scientific topics will be proposed and debated which will have an innovative nature and others on which it is important to focus attention and provide updates – explain the organizers -, with particular reference to prevention, the development of assistive devices, interventions, aids, including the cochlear implant, implantable prostheses and the hearing aids themselves, which have become true earphone minicomputers”.

The program is aimed both at doctors and technicians in a multidisciplinary field, for which ECM accreditation is provided (otolaryngologists, audiologists, paediatricians, medical examiners, psychologists, general practitioners, audiometric technicians, hearing aid specialists, speech therapists) and at deaf people, to their family members and professionals, for the identification of needs and solutions and for the launch of socio-health support initiatives. Updates on the program can be found on the ENS website dedicated to the Conference.
