XIV Edition of the Certamen Plinianum in Castellammare di Stabia: a Cultural Success

The 14th edition of the Certamen Plinianum ended with the award ceremony of the winners in the Conference Room of the Banca Stabiese. Five students were winners. The event was organized by the Certamen Plinianum Association, a delegation of the Italian Association of Classical Culture of Castellammare di Stabia, which is committed to promoting knowledge of the figure and work of Pliny the Elder, an author linked to the cultural history of the city of Stabia . The event was sponsored by the Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia.

The competition was reserved for students in the last and penultimate classes of high schools, including classical, scientific and human sciences high schools. It was also open to equivalent foreign institutions. The Liceo Classico Plinio Seniore and the Liceo Scientifico F. Severi collaborated in the creation of the competition.

The examining commission assigned a passage from Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia, on which the competitors wrote two translations: a “contrastive” one and a classical textual one. The Jury, made up of university professors and high school teachers, was chaired by Prof. Renzo Tosi, National President of the Italian Association of Classical Culture, assisted by Prof. Natascia Pellè, Prof. Pasqualina Vozza and Prof. Matteo Taufer .

There were 29 children who participated in the competition, coming from Foggia, Lucera, Salerno, Acerra, Sarno, Portici, Scafati, Gragnano and from the two high schools of Castellammare di Stabia, the Classical “Plinio Seniore:” and the Scientific “Francesco Severi “.
