Donations scandal. “Citizens, hold those who govern to account”

by Ilaria Baraldi

In March 2020, during the first wave of the covid 19 pandemic, the Municipality of Ferrara – in the person of its pro tempore representative Mayor Alan Fabbri – solicited the solidarity of the citizens of Ferrara to support the hospital, activating an ad hoc current account for the payments that should have gone to Sant’Anna di Cona. Thanks to the donations, the figure of almost 50,000 euros was quickly reached.

We discover after 4 years that not even one euro of what the Municipality collected has been sent to the hospital. General Director Mazzatorta’s justifications as to why that money was not passed on to the real beneficiary ring as out of tune as a cracked bell.

During the pandemic we have seen many, and our municipality was no exception. It is enough to remember the purchase of unsuitable masks, the antics of Lodi who set the trap for the poor newsagent in via Bologna, always Lodi who celebrated in the deserted streets with music and salami or chased the harmless runner.

But let’s not forget the thousands of state euros in shopping vouchers, to access which the selection criteria and method were far from transparent but, as usual, discriminatory.

But here we go further. Here we are at Chiara Ferragni’s level with the Easter egg.

There will be a judicial process and we will see what the outcome will be. But in the meantime, the indignation of the citizens of Ferrara who have been mocked by Fabbri & Co cannot help but rise high.

Those who donated believing that their money would reach the hospital and those who believed in the nice gesture of the council today cannot help but find it indecent to find out how things went, and to read the painful justifications of the administration.

But even those who did not donate and even those who knew nothing about it and read about what happened today for the first time must feel offended and mocked. Having experienced this administration up close in the city council, I am not particularly surprised by what happened.

I consider the council majority to be prone to the will of the council, inadequate for its function of control and direction and I consider Fabbri and his council to be politically unscrupulous and without any shame.

I hope that this umpteenth episode of bad politics, this way of administering public affairs and therefore also resources, public money as if they were their own thing, outrages and disgusts not only me but finally reaches the ears and brains of the many people who will go to vote in June.

Because one thing is certain: if something like this had happened 5 years ago, if a centre-left administration had done something similar, the mayor would have found the citizens rightly furious on the staircase demanding explanations and probably hurling insults at him and tomatoes.

To these people it seems that everything is fine, however, and that they can do anything.

It seems that the people of Ferrara are cheerfully fooled by them without even making a pleat.

So my appeal goes to my fellow citizens: wake up and ask those who govern to account for how they spend your money!
