There is not just one atomic bomb and it may not have the same dimensions or the same devastating effects everywhere. The biggest threat, because it is readily used in public declarations of threat, is paradoxically represented by the smaller ones: tactical bombs, i.e. mini-atomic bombs that can be modulated to calibrate the consequences over a few square kilometres, but are capable of unleashing a reaction psychological chain throughout Europe. Experts at Princeton University recently simulated an escalation of limited nuclear attacks, resulting in more than 90 million casualties. At the beginning of the war in Ukraine there were around one hundred American B-61 warheads distributed in American and NATO bases in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Turkey. On the other hand, Russia was capable of deploying as many as two thousand warheads. And what is also scary is the use of the hypersonic missile, ten times faster than sound, almost impossible to intercept and capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Its use in Ukraine was read as Putin’s not-so-subliminal message to the West. It was the Tsar who wielded the atomic club at the beginning of the war, announcing that he had put the nuclear deterrent forces on alert. The further steps were the transfer (now completed) of atomic bombs to the border with NATO, in Belarus led by its iron ally Lukashenko, and the promise to respond if necessary also with nuclear power to the “not excluded” sending of Western troops by the French president, Macron.

THE ALERT
The fact is that, although unofficially, it is taken for granted in European political-military circles that the Russians can count on a certain number of nuclear warheads not only in Belarus but also in the Kaliningrad enclave, between Poland and Lithuania. A further alarm bell has sounded in European chancelleries after the contemptuous statements made by Trump, candidate for the White House, towards the NATO countries. If the EU were to lose the American nuclear umbrella, to defend itself from the rain of Russian nukes, it could only resort to the French one. Recently London, which is outside the EU, also asked for the return of some US nuclear warheads to its territory, to complement its own. Finally, there is an issue of vectors that affects the various countries.
EUROPE
Observers believe that the recent German orders for the new F-35 DCA (Double Capability Aircraft) version are precisely the response to a possible need to have more atomic warheads on their territory (not to mention that Poland has also asked to have some available , indeed there would be an ongoing dialogue, in this sense, with Washington). The F-35 DCA are equipped with instruments designed specifically for nuclear war. For now, in European countries without nuclear weapons, the “double key” philosophy is in force: the plane is European, the bomb American. Then there is the issue of readiness, because the airports need to be reconfigured to give an immediate response to a possible Russian attack, reactivating the ad hoc hangars and the special elevators that bring the ammunition to the surface. And finally, there is a political issue, because with Great Britain out of the EU and the United States disinterested at the European side, European countries would effectively have to surrender themselves to the French nuclear shield. Is this really what they want, rather than remain under the protective wings of Washington?
