“The PD has never asked for the dissolution of the Municipality of Reggio”

The Metropolitan PD Federation of Reggio Calabria he wakes up and out of nowhere comes up with a statement relating to the facts linked to the dissolution of the Municipality in 2012, defending and protecting himself with some clarifications. A statement that arrives in a moment of apparent calm, when Bari is no longer talked about, as well as the words of Arena, who also spoke to StrettoWeb. Now that the discussion is moving to the many former centre-lefts who have joined Forza Italia, this is what the Democratic Party writes.

“In recent weeks we have witnessed an attempt at revisionism, apparently without logic, which in reality aims to rehabilitate the worst center-right in Reggio through an unlikely and hallucinated narration of the facts concerning him dissolution of the Municipality of Reggio Calabria in 2012. To those who continue to support, on several occasions and in various ways, the thesis according to which the dissolution of the municipal council due to the mafia, the first and only case of a capital municipality dissolved due to mafia infiltration in the history of the Italian Republic, was a political choice to attribute to a political party, we would like to simply remember the facts, historical circumstances that can be easily verified by anyone”.

The facts

“The Access Commission was appointed in January 2012, while the Monti governmentcaretaker government supported by People of Freedom, at that time the political force most represented in the Italian parliament and therefore the main pillar of the majority in support of the Government. The request and subsequent appointment of the Access Commission was made by the Prefect of Reggio Calabria Dr. Luigi Varratta, a person unanimously esteemed and certainly not placed on the left, appointed to lead the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria by the centre-right government led by President Silvio Berlusconi, as well as the heads of the public security bodies (Police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza) and the services secrets.”

“Subsequently the Municipality was dissolved exactly on 9 October 2012, while the same Monti Government was in office which had sent the Access Commission, requested by the prefect Varratta evidently on the basis of the findings of the investigative bodies. The pillar of the majority that decided on the dissolution was always the People of Freedom, the same party of the then mayor Demetrio Arena and the previous mayor Giuseppe Scopelliti. The Democratic Party never called for the dissolution of the Municipalitybecause this evaluation must be the result of a technical analysis and information sent to the ministerial and investigative bodies following the investigation conducted by the Commissioners appointed by the Prefect”.

“The Democratic Party, through its most representative exponents, was instead publicly engaged in a political-administrative activity aimed at ascertaining the real state of municipal finances and had the merit of uncovering the Pandora’s box of the accounting abyss that had caused the collapse of the Municipality (indicated by the Court of Auditors as the only path) which was then averted by the commissioners only thanks to the approval of the law which provided for the new institute of Predissest and recovery plans”.

The arrival of Falcomatà and “the 200 million euros”

“Subsequent administrations led by mayor Falcomatà they have not had the opportunity to fantasize about the past and the dissolution and have had the merit of obtaining from the Government an extraordinary contribution of 200 million euros which was added to the very high taxes and tariffs bitterly paid by the people of Reggio to deal with the debt disaster”.

“The decision taken by Minister Cancellieri and the Monti Government now 12 years ago was therefore born in a context where the majority shareholder was the centre-right and therefore anyone who believes that that choice was wrong need only ask any questions and doubts residual to their party and coalition allies. Perhaps wondering why their friends and political associates decided to support that choice. The Democratic Party certainly has no interest in continuing to talk about the past but neither can it witness one historical falsification, as ridiculous as it is useless if not for those who have developed a complex about it and stubbornly refuse, even after a few decades, to understand and accept what really happened”, the note closes.
