Cnas’s Impervious Environment Rescue trials in Molveno

The sixteenth edition of the SAI, acronym for Rescue in Impervious Environment, took place in Molveno in Trentino from 2 to 5 May. The course, organized by the National Medical School of the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps – this year in collaboration with the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue – aims to transmit to doctors and nurses updated theoretical and practical contents on the advanced treatment of injured people in the environment mountainous and impervious.

The initiative, open to all healthcare personnel, regardless of whether they belong to the Alpine and Speleological Rescue, saw the participation of seventy doctors and nurses coming from all over Italy. Of these, approximately half were rescuers belonging to the CNSAS.

«The SAI represents an important moment of health training where to delve into those particular situations that occur when accidents occur in mountainous or impervious environments, for which the intervention of the Alpine and Speleological Rescue is required – he said Simona Berteletti, director of the National Medical School of the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps and responsible for SAI 2024 – our peculiarity is to bring healthcare-type rescue to the environment; if it is true that all “lay” rescuers receive training from a healthcare point of view, having doctors and nurses on the team is an added value that can make the difference. It’s nice to see the participation of many non-members too, it’s a way to bring them closer and raise their awareness of the world of Alpine Rescue.”

Over the four days of the course, there were lectures on specific topics, practical workshops where you could see the healthcare devices available on the market for patient immobilization in impervious environments and discuss with the manufacturing companies, as well as simulations of interventions in the environment. Among the topics covered, the traumatized person in an impervious environment and the limitation of spinal movements, the suspension syndrome, hypothermia and frostbite, avalanche rescue, scene assessment, the traumatized child, airway management, analgesia, the role of the CNSAS in major emergencies.

On the day dedicated to simulations in the environment, ten different scenarios were prepared and the participants, divided into small groups, were asked to medically manage the various injured people: a forester who fell from a rock jump, a hunter wounded by a firearm , a biker who fell in a steep forest, three different situations of climbers who fell down a wall, a forestry worker crushed by a trunk, a paragliding pilot who fell into the woods, a worker from a scaling company with an amputated leg and a child who fell down the stairs of a cabin.

«The SAI is a traveling course that is organized annually and this year we had the honor of hosting it in Trentino, in Molveno – Stefano Larcherhealth worker of the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue and instructor, among the organizers of SAI 2024 – It is an extraordinary opportunity for doctors and nurses who are part of our organization, but not only, because it allows them to put their skills and knowledge into practice on more scenarios and to practice the peculiarities of medical rescue in an impervious environment”.

«I thank the Municipality of Molveno and Hems Association, who sponsored the event, for their collaboration, as well as the extras and Sofrapa, the company that took care of the make-up, for helping to make the simulations realistic. Thanks to the mayor of Molveno Matteo Sartori, to the President of the CNSAS Maurizio Dellantonio and to the President of the CNSAS Trentino Walter Cainelli for their participation” he added.

The initiative was possible thanks to the support of: Società Incremento Turistico Molveno, Revì – Trentodoc, Medical Parma, Montura, Melinda, Ferrino, Northwall, Dolomiti Paganella Azienda per il Turismo, Flamor Srl, Kong, Ferno Srl, Valmar, Rescue Press , Trentino Marketing.
