Carabinieri recover precious ancient manuscript stolen from Padua

Investigations by the Carabinieri of Bologna and the military of the Verbania section

Cultural heritage – The investigation began in the first months of 2022, when the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Bologna reported an Emilian citizen for receiving stolen goods, also proceeding with the seizure of some archival documents of historical interest.

Among these also a manuscript “Memories relating to the parish church of the Eremitani of Padua and its surroundings collected in the year 1876”.

The subsequent investigations carried out by the soldiers of the Tpc Unit of Bologna made it possible to ascertain that that manuscript came from a bookshop that also sells ancient texts of the Vco.

The investigations, also carried out by the Carabinieri of the Judicial Police section of Verbania, on the one hand verified, in the Venetian parish, that several years earlier the parish archive had suffered a theft and most likely the manuscript in question was part of the loot , on the other hand, that the owner of the Verbano business was unrelated to the facts, as it appeared that he had purchased it from a person who subsequently died, before the document was declared of historical interest by the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendence of Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige.

The investigations into the authenticity of the 1876 manuscript made it possible to verify that the author’s handwriting was the same as that of a parish priest serving in the Venetian parish from 1885 to 1896.

Once the investigations were closed and the position of the local trader was archived, the manuscript relating to the Memoirs relating to the parish church of the Eremitani of Padua and its surroundings was officially returned by the carabinieri to the parish priest of that parish last week.
