L’AQUILA – Many remember the painting of the Madonna with child which was positioned inside Porta Leoni in the nineties. A work that was very popular with the people of L’Aquila, to the point that the cars passing under the Gate on their way down towards Via Strinella sometimes slowed down to admire it. In recent days there have been several posts on Facebook from people interested in knowing what happened to him after years. The answer that will please the people of L’Aquila is this: it is exposed to devotion in the Pasquali barracks which houses the ninth Alpine regiment.
Here’s how she got there. The work was created by students of the L’Aquila art institute in 1995 and, with the approval of the Municipality, was placed in Porta Leoni. It remained there for a few years until the works for the renovation of the Gate began but when they were concluded the Superintendency rejected the proposal to relocate the work where it had been, considering it irreconcilable that a work from the 1300s should host one built in 1995. It was therefore returned to the school.
But it was due to the colonel of the ninth Alpine regiment Pietro Picccirilli and to your interest in art if the work has been removed from the warehouse in which it was located. During a visit to that school, he noticed the dismantled work and asked and obtained permission to bring it back to light by having it displayed in the Pasquali barracks. Now the painting in the photo by G. Cocciolone is found there near a chapel where there are other interesting religious-themed works of art.
