Close encounter between a hiker and a brown bear in the nature of Trentino. It happened days ago in the cockpit of Molveno, where the man would have been surprised by the plantigrade and chased for a quarter of an hour.

From the hiker’s story we learn that the subject was walking along the forest road that leads from the Ciclamino hut to the Croz dell’Altissimo refuge when he suddenly found a bear behind him.

The wild animal would have approached at a distance of less than two meters, while the hiker backed away trying to distance the bear and scare it while always keeping it in sight.

The bear then disappeared into the woods, without any contact occurring. But will this be enough to save his life? The Trentino Forestry Corps was informed of the incident and went to the site for an inspection to collect samples.

Genetic analyzes on the finds found in the area will confirm the identity of the bear and discover whether it has already been the protagonist of other interactions with humans in the past. If so, we believe we know all too well what will happen to him.

A similar story had involved the M90 bear, “guilty” of having followed a couple of hikers from the municipality of Mezzana. Using the radio collar, the animal was identified and killed very quickly. Will the same happen this time too?

At the beginning of March, the Council of the Autonomous Province of Trento approved a regulation that allows the elimination of up to 9 problem bears per year. All it takes is for plantigrades to be classified as dangerous.

Animal rights associations have risen up, angrily criticizing this “bear-killing law” which authorizes a massacre in the name of public safety. The main animal protection groups have requested the intervention of the Italian Government to challenge the provision.

That intervention, however, did not arrive.

A great threat hangs over bears. First protected and voluntarily reintroduced into the territory, now to be destroyed at the slightest “bear-like” behavior.
