The Romeo Menti of Allerona Scalo, a team that plays in the first category Umbrian football championship, and which bears the name of the right wing of Grande Torino, remembers the Superga tragedy, which occurred on 4 May 1949, exactly 75 years ago. “For us it is a commitment and an honor – the president of the sports group, Umberto Mechelli, explains to ANSA – to bear the name of the great Romeo Menti. In our DNA there has always been that spirit that distinguishes the Granata”.

Romeo Menti was founded in 1958 by a group of friends from the town, supported by the then parish priest Don Albino Ermini who was the first president. “Football for this reality – underlines Mechelli – has always been of fundamental importance.

It is especially true for our kids, for us the youth sector is central to the entire sporting and social project that we carry out in our management action.”

In remembering Grande Torino, the president says he has a dream: “It would be wonderful to be able to start a collaboration with Torino football”. “We are a tiny reality and I understand that this is almost unlikely, but I am sure that we share the same values and ideals – adds Mechelli – and then we see in Granata president Urbano Cairo a man driven by great sporting passion, the one that has accompanied me since over 20 years at the helm of Romeo Menti”.

“Heart, determination, education and therefore fair play naturally belong to us and we immediately pass this on to the new players who arrive to play at Allerona scalo”, underlines the president, who before taking over the company leadership had been the historic captain of the team. Yesterday afternoon, before the first team’s training session, with a view to the play-off clash to win the Promotion championship, many of the managers gathered at the sports facility to remember what happened on the Superga hill, including Marcello Tomassini, who was one of the founders of Romeo Menti. Among those present also the current priest of the town Don Zefiro Tordi who wanted to ensure a prayer for the legendary Grande Torino team.
