“The 5 Star Movement it is an important component that supports my candidacy for mayor, it is an important piece of the city that has set in motion and that, in our opinion, will reach the end on 8 and 9 June because Bari needs continuity on the one hand but also a major renewal. We need to a new ruling classto guarantee legality and a more just city. We have made many steps forward in recent years and we must make many more important ones». In his speech from the stage, Laforgia has reconstructed the events that led to the “split” in the center-left and the cancellation of the primaries with the mayoral candidate of the Democratic Party, Vito Leccesewhich should have taken place on 7 April, just three days after the arrests for electoral corruption of Sandro Cataldo, at the time head of the “South to the centre” movement – later dissolved – which should have participated in the electoral competition.
Giuseppe Conte then spoke: «We held a very linear path on administrative matters”, he stated from the stage, explaining that the 5 Star Movement has always maintained that “to beat these right-wingers we must unite, put aside selfishness and work with a constructive spirit. That’s what we declared right away». Unity among progressives, however, has not been found. «We will have primaries in the polls. We are committed to maintaining this unified spirit, we never wanted to break up – Conte reiterated -. There is no political figure who can say that Conte tried to choose a candidate. The president of the 5 Star Movement then highlighted that «we were very rigorous on Bari» but «the center-right cannot take advantage of this: it gave the examples of the Palermo investigation and the investigations into the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanché.
Conte then proposed a resolution to Laforgia to create Bari “City of peace“.
