Silvia Listorti’s exhibition at the Studio G7 Gallery in Bologna

The Studio G7 Gallery in Bologna presents “Clinamen”, the first solo exhibition of the artist Silvia Listorti (Milan, 1987), accompanied by an interesting text by Federico Ferrari. The title chosen by the artist is a reference to Epicurean physics which underlines the interest in the body and matter, elements at the center of her research.

The exhibition presents five new works focusing on the variety of perspectives on the human body and its presumed fragility. Epicurean themes return again and again.
“Glass is only apparently fragile”, explains Silvia Listorti, “sometimes, to break it, you have to hit it with a hammer”. The artist denies preconceptions linked to materials, which instead can surprise and go beyond the limits induced by common opinion.

The work Behind us, the night (2024) it is a glass sculpture, obtained by lost wax casting, a technique usually used in bronze working. And more than bronze, glass is resistant to impacts and stress. The reference to the body is in the shape of the sculpture, a cast of the artist’s shoulders. The work draws inspiration from the verses of Cristine Lavant, in which the body detaches itself from its shadow, leaving it to wander in solitude. A terracotta work, If the ears see and the eyes listen (2023), comes in the form of cubes with a silhouette in the shape of an ear. Its title comes from a Japanese haiku: “If the ears see and the eyes listen, we have no doubts.”

Silvia Listorti: theory and drawing in the works on display

In Overlay (2023) it is the rice paper that appears almost “indestructible”, remaining strong even when subjected to stratifications of water and pigment. Silvia Listorti’s drawings assume a vertical position only during the installation phase, which is considered unnecessary. During the process, the artist applies pure pigments and graphite to the sheets of rice paper placed on the horizontal surface, following the technique shodo, the Japanese art of spiritual expression in the form of calligraphy. In the process of developing the drawing, the concept of clinamen is reflected, in which atoms deviate from their vertical trajectory to form new bodies.
