The Sikh community celebrates, 4 thousand in procession in Bergamo

Over 4,000 people took part in Vaisakhi on Saturday 4 May, one of the most important festivals for the Sikh Indian community, which is very numerous in the Bergamo province. Organized by the cultural center of Cortenuova, the procession called «Nagar Kirtan»started from the square of Malpensata along via Carnovali up to via Spino, with the cart with the Sacred Text preceded by a group of faithful who cleaned the road as a sign of respect.

Don Massimo Rizzi, director of the diocesan office for interreligious dialogue, brought the greetings of Bishop Francesco Beschi: «Dear friends of the Sikh community – wrote the Bishop –, I would like to reach you on the occasion of the Nagar Kirtan to offer you a warm greeting. This year too there were several opportunities to feel mutual closeness in important moments: from the commemoration for the deceased during the Covid pandemic to the events of the international day for human brotherhood. I thank you for all the moments of knowledge, collaboration or dialogue of which we are co-builders and co-protagonists. I take the opportunity of this letter to invite our communities to put themselves at the service of the poor and needy who live on our land, thinking together about one or more actions based on the shared value of solidarity. In this spirit, we wish you that the Nagar Kirtan and this time of celebration will bear many spiritual, personal and community fruits.”

Councilor Giacomo Angeloni also intervened bringing the greetings of the municipal administration: «I am happy to be here for a celebration that is very important for the Sikh community. After being the Capital of Culture, Bergamo must be the capital of cultures; we are convinced that it is possible to work together.”
