«We are on the field to represent the center-right in Avellino. The coalition that supports Genovese? A civic project that doesn’t seem too different to that of the outgoing majority.” The speaker is Ines Fruncillo, provincial president of Fratelli d’Italia and candidate for the party in the next European elections.
Fruncillo, in recent days you have launched Modestino Iandoli’s candidacy for mayor of Avellino. Is everything confirmed?
“Absolutely yes. The provincial level of Fdi, with the sharing of the regional and the national, has always intended to guarantee the presence in this electoral competition of a clear centre-right proposal and this proposal could only be linked to the parties, which represent a guarantee for the voters in terms of values and planning”.
Speaking of parties, however, the UDC has announced its solitary race in support of Gennaro Romei, while Forza Italia has made it clear that it will support the civic pact created in the wake of Rino Genovese. Why were you unable to reach an agreement?
«Several times we have called for a discussion between the parties that make up the coalition, however, when we verified the existence of positions that looked at civility we took a necessary initiative to guarantee the presence of an authoritative centre-right proposal for the city of Avellino».
From the first moment she showed herself skeptical towards an openness to civility. Why?
«Because I believe that a center-right coalition must be represented by parties and, therefore, by lists identified by symbols. Having said this, I make it clear that an openness to civic experiences, as part of building a broad coalition, can also be taken into consideration, but only at a later stage. In short, it is the parties that draw the perimeter and indicate the route, not the civic bodies.”
What do you think of the coalition created to support Genovese?
«Despite the respect due to a different project in the field, I can say that I’m not passionate about it. On the other hand, it essentially borrows the administrative action of the outgoing majority and I certainly cannot consider that experience a virtuous model to refer to.”
In short, don’t you see any distance between this project and the one linked to former mayor Gianluca Festa?
«Honestly, I can’t spot any big differences. The only real news is that Fi has decided not to take part in the electoral competition by not presenting its own party list, something that had never happened before.”
What are the priorities for Avellino for Fdi?
«We imagine a strong relaunch project for the economic fabric, focusing on the great instrument of the single SEZ in order to reindustrialise the territory. Furthermore, we are aiming for a new urban planning model that is capable of giving us a more liveable and energy efficient city. Naturally, we look with great attention to an economic relaunch that passes through the cultural and, therefore, tourism sector, without forgetting the need to strengthen social policies, with particular attention to the needs of families, the weakest groups and working mothers”.
Together with the municipal elections, the European elections for which she is a candidate will take place. What game will it be?
«Giorgia Meloni and Fdi have made a lot of effort to restore centrality to Italy in Europe and this is the time to understand if Italians are satisfied with the work we are doing. We want to be judged on our ability to defend the national interest before anything else.”
How?
«Fdi has a strong role in the conservative party with Meloni as president, the objective is to build a centre-right majority in Europe too, to abandon the ideological choices of a progressive majority which have done so much damage, just think of the farmers. Italy must be aware that to change the direction of European policies, conservatives need to have a decisive role.”
Why did you decide to run?
«Look, I am a soldier and I am deployed on the front line because this is a decisive battle, and Italy, and even more so the South, cannot afford to make the wrong choice».
