“The navigable franc of bridge over the Strait of Messina it is 72 meters for a width of 600 meters and is reduced to 65 meters only in the presence of exceptional conditions of heavy road and rail traffic. These parameters are in line with the existing bridges on major international shipping lanes, in line with the procedures established by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations”.

The managing director of the Strait of Messina, Pietro Ciucci, told ANSA after the declarations of the president of Federlogistica, Luigi Merlo, and reported on several occasions, that 65 meters of height is too little for large ships.

“I would also like to remind you that on the topic of navigation safety for both the construction and operation phases of the bridge, with particular reference also to the navigable freeway, a specific technical table coordinated by the Admiral was established by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Nunzio Martello”,- added Ciucci -, explaining that “the commission has already carried out an in-depth examination of traffic in the Strait in recent years, broken down by different vessels, from which no critical issues related to the bridge emerge” – concluded the CEO.
