Died in hospital after routine surgery

Diego Rulli, a 53 year old man resident in Motta di Livenza, was found lifeless in his hospital bed, in San Vito al Tagliamento, a few hours after undergoing routine surgery to the shoulder.

Diego Rulli was a man in apparently good health. He had undergone acromioplasty on the rotator cuff, a routine surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia on a day hospital basis. Pre-operative tests had not revealed any anomalies. However, a few hours after the surgery, Rulli was found dead in his hospital bed.

The Pordenone prosecutor’s office, led by deputy prosecutor Monica Carraturo, opened a case for the hypothesis of manslaughter and ordered an autopsy. The anesthetist and the orthopedist who performed the operation were investigated, an act required as a defense guarantee.

The autopsy, which will be performed by the medical examiner Antonello Cirnelli, will play a crucial role in clarifying the causes of death. The professionals under investigation will have the possibility to appoint their own medical-legal consultants. Nothing emerges from the medical records that could explain the patient’s death.
