The recycling of steel packaging is a virtuous path that begins in the homes of Italians with separate waste collection and ends in the steelworks, where the waste is melted down to give it a new life.

A heroic journey that from 5 to 7 May will stop in Siena with Capitan Acciaio, the “recycling superhero” created to raise citizens’ awareness of the importance of correct separate waste collection for subsequent recycling.

The initiative is promoted by Ricrea – the national consortium for the recovery of steel packaging – and will take place at the La Lizza Gardens, to concretely demonstrate how, thanks to recycling, all steel packaging such as jars, cans, drums, milk , buckets, cans, crown caps and closures, can be reborn in the form of new products.

Among the many activities offered, creative-play workshops for the little ones aimed at raising awareness of the different types of packaging and stimulating their imagination; quizzes and games to test adults’ knowledge of good recycling practices.

«In 2023, Italy achieved extraordinary results, achieving a recycling rate for steel packaging of 87.8%, already significantly exceeding the European target of 80% set for 2030 – explains Domenico Rinaldini, Ricrea president – These numbers are the result of numerous communication initiatives at national and local level, just like the Capitan Acciaio tour, and of the synergistic and well-tested work of all the players in the supply chain. Our recycling superhero allows us to talk about the environmental convenience of the correct disposal of steel packaging, protagonists of a virtuous and endless circular path: if collected and sent for recycling, in fact, they can come back to new life in the form of artefacts such as tracks railways, bolts or street furniture”.

Capitan Acciaio’s stages along the country will also be an opportunity to make known the virtuous data on the recovery and recycling of packaging waste in Italy: in 2023, an average of 4.8 kg of steel packaging was collected per inhabitant. A confirmation that the collection and recycling system is well tested.

In the last year, 428,043 tonnes of steel packaging were sent for recycling (+2% compared to the previous year), sufficient to build approximately 4,280 km of railway tracks, ideally able to cover the distance between Siena and Edinburgh.
