20 itineraries immersed in the charm of traveling as it used to be done to discover the most evocative locations in Lombardy on board historic trains

The season of historic trains of the FS in Foundation Lombardy is about to restart, offering enthusiasts and the curious the opportunity to experience a journey through time through enchanting landscapes and suggestive itineraries of the region.

Promoted by the Department of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Lombardy Region, in collaboration with the Fondazione Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and FS Treni Turistici Italiani, this initiative represents a unique way to explore Italian railway history.

With 20 circulations expected In this year’s calendar, there will be numerous opportunities to board historic trains and discover the beauty of Lombardy from a different perspective. Among the most significant innovations, the two vintage train circulations along the itinerary stand out Milan-Brescia-Desenzano and from Milan to Genoa with the ETR 252 ‘Arlecchino’, symbol of the economic boom of the 60s and of Made in Italy.

Among the most popular itineraries, the Laveno Express is proposed to explore the Lake Maggiorethe Lario Express from Milan and Monza to Como and Lecco, the Sebino Express to Lake Iseo, the Lomellina Express from Milan to Mortara and the Besanino Express to Besana, Molteno and Lecco. Furthermore, two historic trains are planned on the Milan-Chiavenna route and between Milan and Cremona.

Another good news for two-wheel lovers is that it will be possible transport your bicycles for free on board historic trains, thanks to specially equipped luggage compartments. Furthermore, children up to 14 years old travel for free. Tickets to travel on historic trains can be purchased on all Trenitalia sales channels, including ticket offices, apps and the official website.

This initiative not only offers a unique opportunity to explore the history and beauty of Lombardy, but also contributes to the valorization of the historical heritage of the railway, with the annual financial support of the Lombardy Region. With a budget of 600,000 euros, of which approximately half is allocated to historic trains, the maintenance and development of these precious cultural and tourist resources.

Below we leave you the calendar with dates of itineraries:

  • Laveno Express: from Milan to discover Lake Maggiore. Departures scheduled for Sunday May 5th, June 2nd, September 8th;
  • Lario Express from Milan and Monza to Como and Lecco. Departures scheduled for Sunday May 12th and October 13th;
  • Sebino Express from Milan to Lake Iseo (Paratico). Departures scheduled for Sunday May 19th, June 16th, September 15th and October 20th;
  • Lomellina Express from Milan to Mortara. Departures scheduled for Sunday May 26th And September 29th on the occasion of the “Benvenuti in Lomellina” event and the Goose Salami Festival respectively;
  • Besanino Express from Milan to Besana, Molteno and Lecco. Departures scheduled for Sunday September 22nd and October 27;
  • Two historic trains on the Milan – Chiavenna route (Sunday June 23) and between Milan and Cremona (Sunday November 17for the Nougat Festival).
