Bologna – Energy efficiency, ecological transition, mitigation actions and adaptation to climate change.

These are the key points identified for the valorisation of the Industrial and technological center of Ferraraa project which saw the participation of all the companies present in the industrial complex and was divided into six lines of intervention developed through working groups between public and private entities.

And which kicks off this afternoon, in the city of Este, with the theme song of a specific one protocol between the ministries of Business and Made in Italy, of the Environment and Energy Security, the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Municipality and Province of Ferrara, the University, the District Authority of the Po Basin, Confindustria Emilia, Federchimica, trade union organizations and various companies that they operate in the Ferrara petrochemical hub.

The agreement arises from the desire of the Ferrara area to create a system, in coherence with the Pact for Work and the Climate, with the aim of bringing the most important industrial reality of the entire area towards energy efficiency and designing the new chemistry of the future which guarantees the stability and growth of businesses, good occupation and at the same time greater environmental protectionrelating in particular to water resource.

Among the lines of intervention identified, a priority is in fact the creation ofrevamping’the Polo’s water cycle, with actions aimed at the recovery and reuse of process and rainwater that allow for reduction of water withdrawal for industrial use from the Po river.
The flow rate of water currently withdrawn to meet the production needs of the Industrial and Technological Center of Ferrara is approximately 17 million m3/year. The revamping intervention will allow a savingsin terms of water withdrawal up to 53%, effectively halving the use of the precious resource. This is an important response to the water emergency that has affected the whole country in recent years and in particular Emilia-Romagna and is, today, one of the most serious and evident effects of climate change.

The agreement
The signatory parties undertake to identify, through a technical table, potential financing lines and shared territorial policies to encourage the efficient use of water resources and to create favorable conditions for a more comprehensive energy transition towards renewable sources and decarbonisation of industrial production, within the general framework of a rational and efficient use of energy. The goal is to lower the ‘basal metabolism’ of the entire production areasimultaneously increasing the attractiveness of the site, encouraging the expansion of already active settlements and the establishment of new realities, to support employment stability and its increase.
