CIVITA CASTELLANA – Tomorrow, Friday 3 May at 5.30pm at the Enrico Minio municipal library, Stefano Cavalieri will hold a conference on the topic “The orientations of the medieval churches in Civita Castellana”, in which three medieval city churches will be examined, with the aim of revealing their hidden secrets through the study of orientations, in search of the day on which these structures were oriented to bring to light the links with the liturgical festivities of past. The churches that will be examined are San Gregorio, Santa Maria dell’Arco and Santa Maria delle Grazie. Hypotheses will be made on the dating of the orientations, on their origins and changes in the historical context, and also connections with liturgical holidays: the conference will be an overview of the intrinsic links between the alignments of buildings and the sacred holidays of the Middle Agesto offer a new look at the spiritual practices of the time and a new method for understanding medieval ecclesiastical buildings.
Saturday 4 May it closes in the open air with a walk in nature: from 09.30 Luca Panichelli will guide the participants on an excursion on the Via Amerina and the Tagliata Fantibassi. We will start from Falerii Novi and cross the stretch of Via Amerina called Cavo degli Zucchi: here you will be able to admire the remains of the ancient necropolises dug into the tufaceous walls on the edges, including the stupendous Tomb of the King and Queen. Participants will enter one of the most beautiful and wild gorges in this area: the the final destination of this cultural walk will, in fact, be the majestic Tagliata (or Via Cava) Fantibassi. This ancient road, hand-carved into the tuff around 380 BC, with walls up to 15 meters high, still preserves important inscriptions today, as well as an eternal veil of mystery and suggestions.
