Reggio, the Tramontana movement ready to take off its veil: president chosen

The launch of a new association is approaching on the banks of the Strait, a “container of ideas” as they usually say in these cases, which will however have a careful eye on the next Reggio municipal elections.

It was December 5, 2023 when on these pages we talked about the first meetings, meetings that have continued on a regular basis in recent months, useful for finalizing the ideas and objectives that will indicate the path of the association.

May 11th or 18th the dates initially identified for the launch of the new movement, however the latest rumors seem to suggest a postponement 1-2 weeks compared to initial ideas. However, the desire remains to remove the veil on the new association before the European elections, therefore there remains a month to avoid having to postpone the launch event compared to the appointment with the polls scheduled between 6 and 9 June.

While waiting to know the date and location of the inauguration, the name of the president who will lead the new association has already emerged. According to what has been gathered, it will be Salvatore Vermiglio: former president of the Reggio Calabria Order of Architects, he is an appreciated and well-liked profile in the city.

From ‘Invisible Mediterraneans’ it is possible to read his position decidedly in favor of Bridge over the Strait.

“Our South would become a strong South with a say on the economic and political level, a new center of gravity between Africa, the East and Europe. In summary, the point is that if the bridge is not built, the infrastructures will not be built, the fundamental ones, intra-regional ones and connections to Rome and the other regions.

The urgency of the bridge and of a coordinated and parallel project between bridge and infrastructure means transforming Sicily and Calabria into Europe.
Backing away from the commitment to build the bridge, on the other hand, means remaining still, anchored to that prefabricated vision of the South, denying its European and global potential

Denying the bridge means remaining invisible. The invisibility of the territory is not a protection of its beauty, but a detriment to its valorization and its diffusion”, Vermiglio’s thoughts.

The soon-to-be-born movement referable to Ninni Tramontana (who will not be president also to continue his role at the Chamber of Commerce) in recent months has gathered the support of dozens of entrepreneurs, professionals, managers, representatives of trade associations, doctors and public administration employees.

The launch event, although apparently linked to an association that will not have political interests among its priorities, will represent an important step in view of future municipal elections on the banks of the Strait. With the same Tramontana, according to the thoughts of many, ready to take the field with a candidacy for mayor of civic expression, but ready to dialogue with the ‘traditional’ parties and in particular the centre-right ones.
