AK-47 Carpi operation: the worried comment of the CGIL Sociale

‘The episode of the Carpi Pakistani gang is not an isolated episode, but the symptom of a system that favors the exploitation of illegal work’

The arrest of around twenty members of the AK-47 Carpi gang, most of them residents of Carpi and employed as couriers for two important shipping companies in the province of Modena, with very serious charges of extortion, threats, self-laundering, illicit intermediation and exploitation of labour, also sparked a worried comment from the provincial CGIL. “The fact – declares a note released today signed by the provincial secretary Filt:Cgil, Marco Bottura – raises yet another alarm bell about the gray world of labor contracting, a world favored over the years by increasing legislative deregulation and companies that prefer to contract rather than hire directly to save costs.”

“Applause – states the transport and logistics workers’ union – certainly goes to the Modena Prosecutor’s Office and the law enforcement forces involved in the investigation and operations (Digos of Modena and State Police of Carpi), but the only repression it will not be enough to reduce or cancel these phenomena of exploitation and illegality. Even in our rich province there are conditions of social fragility and economic interests that favor irregularities and illegalities in the world of work”.

“The episode of the Pakistani gang from Carpi is not an isolated episode, but the symptom of a system that favors the exploitation of labor – declares Bottura -. It’s not just a crime problem, but it’s also a social problem.” Filt Cgil is engaged in the negotiation of the renewal of the national logistics and goods transport contract to extend the protections provided for “procurement contracts” to “transport service contracts”. “It is necessary to change the laws – continues Bottura – to restore rights to workers and not abandon them in a state of permanent blackmail. The recent campaign to collect signatures for the repeal referendums proposed by the CGIL goes in this direction. In these months, worker assemblies will be held precisely to democratically exercise this right to stable, dignified, safe and protected work.”
