The vigilantes arrive. From today to keep an eye on the situation in the so-called gardens of Viale Michelangelo Porcinai, Private security personnel will take care of it. The announcement was made official by the mayor of Arezzo, Alessandro Ghinelli, through his social channels. “As emerged during the last municipal council – writes the mayor – starting from today and until the start of the redevelopment works (the area will be fenced off in the next few days), the “Porcinai” gardens will serve the private security operators, activated to ensure protection of the area”.

Days and time slots have also been identified in which the area will be manned by decoration workers. The security guards will be on site from Sunday to Thursday from 2pm to 2am. On Friday and Saturday, however, surveillance will be ensured until 4am.

“As established – adds the mayor – the action of private operators will support the activity carried out by the municipal police and all law enforcement agencies. They will have the task of observing and providing useful information for the prevention and repression of criminal acts. I thank the prefecture for its collaboration and the green light for this measure, necessary to guarantee greater safety and better liveability in the entire area, legitimately requested by residents and traders”.

Porcinai in the eye of the storm

In the past weeks, within that strip that separates Viale Michelangelo from Via Spinello Aretino and Niccolò Aretino, multiple episodes of crime and social degradation have occurred. But more generally, for years, traders and residents have complained about the presence of drug dealers, people dedicated to camping out and a growing concentration of fights, assaults and crimes. In the last period, the escalation of incidents that have occurred has brought the issue of safety within the gardens back to the center of the political debate. In this sense, during the last meeting of the city council, Mayor Ghinelli had announced that: “from the beginning of June there will be a construction site which, thanks to the workers, will have a presence and a fixed presence that will largely solve the problem, but from now on we will implement a triple contrast action: spotlights will be placed to illuminate the part of the gardens where news events always occur, the trees will be thinned out to make visibility wider and an agreement will be made with private security for a fixed presence. All in agreement with the prefecture”.
