The book: Paolo Salvatori, “Intelligence, quo vadis? Past and future of foreign secret services”, La Lepre Edizioni

What has been the role of intelligence organizations in the geopolitical scenarios ranging from the Second World War to the present day? The text is divided into three parts which cover the history of the last eighty years: the period of the Cold War (1947/1989) characterized by the contrast between the Western world and the communist world, which saw the birth of the CIA (1947). In this context, the situation in Italy is analyzed in particular; the second part is dedicated to the twenty years of American interventionist liberalism (1989/2008), with the USA, and consequently the CIA, engaged in the impossible mission of guaranteeing an international world order by “exporting” democracy and fundamental freedoms of the Enlightenment concept in every corner of the earth; the third part begins with the Obama presidency (2009) which, albeit amidst a thousand uncertainties and contradictions, sees the progressive disengagement of the United States from the role of “guardian of the world”.

The smart competition between the USA and China begins, in a global context characterized by apolar chaos. It is of the utmost importance today to have increasingly efficient intelligence. Europe and Italy, therefore, have the task of accepting this challenge.

The author: Paolo Salvatori, after obtaining a degree in political science, joined the state administration in the international trade sector.

Having soon entered the national security apparatus, he has been involved for almost three decades in combating particularly insidious threats such as the trafficking of sensitive technologies, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and international terrorism. Parallel to his career in our Intelligence, he has always cultivated writing.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on the library’s YouTube channel.

As in previous editions, the library will donate the book under review to those who participate, until all available copies are exhausted.
