“My dad worked at the blacksmith, he would be very sorry.” Stories, proposals and nostalgia on the parapets of Como’s lakeside

Beautiful little stories continue to emerge from the issue of the parapets on the lakeside of Como, with the historic ones with the rudder motif eliminated and then never reappeared due to the bulkhead construction site and now – waiting for after 16 years the Region to finally let the public know Como the alternative solution – invoked by many citizens (for your stories, reports, photos and videos write to [email protected] or to the editorial team’s WhatsApp 335.8366795).

Many would at least like to know precisely where the hundreds of meters removed and – mockery of mockery – partly even restored at the expense of the community ended up before being declared unusable (we attach the details in the article at the bottom).

But returning to the voices of the citizens, many say they are ready to sign a possible petition for the return of the rudders to the lakeside even if this would not remedy the practical problems, namely the fact that the old parapets are no longer up to standard for the height (10 cm below the legal limit) and perhaps not only for that detail. But many are not resigned to the fact that those parapets have disappeared. This is the case for example of il Marisa Arrighi who also left us a touching personal memory: “My dad was a blacksmith’s boy, he always talked to me about the much work he had done, now he would be very sorry”.

But there have also been voices from expert professionals, such as that of Monica Capuano: “I am a restorer, I was born and raised in Como always seeing these beautiful parapets, they are made of cast iron and can be raised… of course you can do anything… you just need to want it… if you collect signatures I will be there”.

And there is also no shortage of skepticism from the former councilor Nini Binda who – publishing various photos of the historic railing – commented: “The mystery persists.
Who knows where the Rudders went! The renovation of the lakefront remains the open wound of the unfinished (it’s the detail that counts). And that those hideous glass partitions are not put in….”.

“It was in all the photos of our childhood…” The letter and the fate of the historic parapet of the lakeside of Como
