Etruscans and Villanovan people, the Bolognese stops to discover them

Castenaso (Bologna), 29 April 2024 – A fascinating journey, what Bologna and its province guarantee for those who are passionate about ancient history. As we know, our city was founded, with the name of Felsina, by a proto-Etruscan civilisation, which lived in the area until the arrival of the Celts in the 4th century BC.

In particular, it was Lo who found the first finds from the Etruscan era scholar Giovanni Gozzadini in Villanova di Castenaso, on the eastern outskirts of Bologna, between 1853 and 1855: there a necropolis of over 350 tombs was brought to light, burials both by incineration and inhumation.

Hence the name civilization Villanovan. That site still represents an obligatory stop for those who want to discover the ancient civilization, but certainly not the only one in the territory of Bologna and its province. We talk about it today on our free podcast, ‘Il Resto di Bologna’, which tells of facts and characters linked to our city and can be listened to either by framing the QR Code on the front page of the news with your smartphone, or on audio platforms such as Spotify, Apple and Google Podcasts.

In this journey a Etruscan stagesalso reported by Bologna Welcome, include the Civic Archaeological Museum in via dell’Archiginnasio, the Margherita Gardens (where you will find, among other things, a perfect reproduction of a Villanovan hut), the Cirenaica (exactly Corte 9 in via Bentivogli), the Certosa, where the engineer Antonio Zannoni, another discoverer of remains, is buried, and of course the Muv, Museum of Villanovan civilization, in Castenaso, where you can see the ‘Stele of Swords’.
