Today, a escape attempt took place in the VI Section of Outside Department in Salerno. A common prisoner in precautionary isolation managed to climb over the surrounding wall, taking advantage of the lack of surveillance in the courtyard. The escapee was then blocked near the sports field thanks to the timely intervention of the prison police staff, alerted by a female unit on duty.
The SAPPE alarm
The episode provoked yet another protest by the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union (SAPPE), which denounces the conditions of lack of staff and security inside the prison. Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of the SAPPE for Campania, highlights the presence of numerous prisoners with psychiatric problems who have not been adequately assessed and managed, creating an unmanageable situation for the staff.
Lack of staff and structural deficiencies
Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE, requests an intervention from the Ministry of Justice and the competent bodies to evaluate the work of the regional penitentiary superintendent Lucia Castellano. Capece highlights the difficult conditions in which prison officers operate, due to lack of staff, organizational and internal security deficiencies. Added to these are the frequent mobility measures which further destabilize the staff.
Request for urgent intervention
The SAPPE calls for the active involvement of the Campania Region and its representatives to address the critical issues of the Campania penitentiary system, in line with article 27 of the Constitution which aims to re-educate prisoners. Capece concludes by calling for decisive action by the State to restore order and security within prisons, putting an end to the impunity of violent prisoners.
